Wednesday, August 20th, 2008

by Matt Hedges

The importance of blogging is growing all the time. It is a way for to publish internet content. Although blogs were originally started as a journalist tool, they have enabled firms to make money.

Regardless of how it is used, a blog needs to be managed. This is simple but it has to be done as it will ensure you remain in contact with visitors and other people.

The first task should be to think about why you are starting a blog, is it for your own use or would you to gain income from it. No matter the reason you should be able to get a low priced host with no trouble. Some people do question the quality of a cheap host but satisfactory results can be obtained.

The low cost may be of interest to some but equally, it is disliked by others. People who like it are those who say that price is extremely important. People who do not stay around are those who believe you must spend money to get the best quality, service or features. This is not true but they believe a low cost host would damage their site and reputation and would make it pointless in having a

The attractiveness of blogs as a means to spread the word about your ideas and opinions is high and you can have people passing remarks too. As more bloggers come online, the popularity will skyrocket. Another reason for this is that there is no longer the need to have a company hosting your site. It is possible to get a host that is right for you or you can do it by yourself. This will offer you benefits and place you in charge, something that not all blog hosts can say.

Rich or poor for your choice of blog host

It possible to be a great success online if you have a blog that is affordable. This makes it vital to be aware of well priced host providers who will be able to provide a number of additional services. It is also good to search for a host who will make it eas7 for you to set up. A great number of low cost hosts provide templates so clients can have their site designed in minutes. This is a great boost for people who have little technical skills.

A cheap blog host enables you to manage your account with no trouble at all. This is mainly due to the fact that almost all blog host service providers have user-friendly features which make it a child’s play for the client to post content on the blog. Another benefit of cheap blog hosts in that they have their blog platforms designed in such a manner that it gets updated automatically. It means that whenever you post new content on the blog, the blog gets updated automatically. However, indexation in search engines is the most important advantage of preferring a cheap blog host than an expensive one, as the former can index in the search engines very quickly. That means that on signing up with a cheap blog host, your online exposure will increase tremendously since your blog will be featured in search engines quickly. To cut it short, cheap blog hosts have many features which make it preferable over an expensive one. So if you want to succeed online, then it is important to consider the cheap blog hosts due to their inherent benefits over the expensive ones.

There is little doubt that the numbers of blog posters are on the rise. There are a number of webmasters who utilize blogs to discuss themselves and what they have done. Not just the great ones even the amateur ones do this. Some people view a blog as a great way to promote a site whilst others like to chat and tell people their thoughts. Blogs are not dull or uninteresting things, they can move a lot of traffic on the internet and a lot of money can be made from them.

You must also have decided to join in the bandwagon. So to take the first step, make sure that you are actually working with the proper tools. The most important factor that you need to consider is the web hosting provider. Many web host companies offer various features at different prices, and it is only because of the huge demand for web hosts that there are so many providers to select from today.

Depending on what your blog is, some features will make it a success if you get them. An important feature is having a database to be able to store the blog content. If you use Control Panel the database will be stored on MySQL. The most up to date version is called MySQL4 and MySQL5 is in production. Choosing a major web host will ensure you get MySQL4 as your database provision.

Blogs are very much required to be reliable. As a blogger, you will be interested to see to it that the readers can access your blog whenever they want. Due to the fact that blogs account for high bandwidth and heavy traffic, a traffic level is essential. The blogger submits an online message which is spread to search engines and other blog services, which intimates the internet of a new message.

There is a limit placed on many sites with regards to traffic to and from a site and this is what is known as the bandwidth hen it is measured. A low bandwidth is fine if you have low traffic. If your site becomes more popular, it is possible to buy more bandwidth.

Sometimes your web host provider will impose a limit on the bandwidth that can be used in your package. Quite often the host will not offer the full amount of bandwidth that is available to you. This means you need to ensure the host is able to cater for all the potential traffic that could come your way.

If your server is slow, this is a terrible situation. It can hard to gauge the speed of the server but there are some websites which can assist and these can be found via Google.

Also, prior to committing to any host, do a fair amount of research to determine how reliable or otherwise your selected web host is. Given the importance of reliability, make sure that at least 99% of their clients are satisfied with them. People who surf the net are impatient in nature, and if they can’t access your site for a couple of times, probability is high that they will call it a day. So you will have fewer visitors to your blog.

What you need:

If your website is not one to attract huge traffic, then you can go for the inexpensive web host package, which will do well for you. But a dedicated hosting solution will be needed in case you require a high level of traffic. They are a bit on the expensive side, but give you more bandwidth to work with. So it all depends on your requirement here.

Understanding Web Hosting Bandwidth

Wednesday, August 20th, 2008

by Matt Hedges

“Bandwidth” is a title that you may have heard many web hosts, including your own, discussing from time to time. A simple definition of this term is that is how much data is passed over an internet connection from one set to another. Bandwidth is one of the most important services that a web host can provide and is usually measured in how bits are sent each second. The amount of data being used on a website varies depending on what the the website is being used for. Sites where there is a lot of interaction and communication will take up a bigger bandwidth and this means sites like forums or blogs take up more bandwidth than a more common website. These sites offer far more interaction with the opportunity to load up content and add debate or opinions which is why they take up more bandwidth. These websites will have a greater amount of traffic in comparison to standard websites provided by firms which is another reason why in comparison, the amount of bandwidth that is used by communication or network sites will be much higher.

It may help to break down how you can calculate your monthly website usage and this can be done very simply. The first step should be determining how much bandwidth your website uses, for calculation sake, lets say 20KB. The next step is to work out how many visits your site has per day, which for simplicity sake we shall say is ten hits. This calculations means your daily usage equates to 20 x 10. To get your monthly usage, you simply multiply your daily usage by the number of the days in the month. An important thing to remember is that some providers may list the bandwidth in bytes as opposed to bites.

Many people get confused about how to translate the sizes but an easy way to remember it is that one byte is the equivalent of eight bits. The next step up is 1 kilobyte and this is the equivalent of 1024 bytes.

It is easy to use bandwidth unnecessarily and the biggest culprits are large sized graphics and a lot of customer comments. It is also fair to say that if the end user seeks to receive a lot of images or large amounts of data that they too will use a fair share of bandwidth. This has to be borne in mind when you are constructing your website. It is common to want to add a lot of cool audio and visual treats to your site but doing so will greatly increase your bandwidth consumption. Knowing how much bandwidth you expect to use will help you seek the right package for your usage but beware of web host providers not living up to their promise. There are some providers who will not deliver what they guarantee and this makes choosing the correct supplier an important task.

Understand the amount of bandwidth that fits your requirements.

How would you known that what is the required bandwidth of your website? This question needs to be answered from technical and mathematical point of view. This would also determine the website content you are having and have projected to include in future. It is always better to keep some bandwidth in hand as it would allow you to develop the website and include new features later on. You should take out some time in determining the bandwidth required for your website. If required you can discuss the issue with your web hosts who can suggest you better on this. Almost every hosting company measures the bandwidth plan on a monthly basis and hence you can chart your requirements based n that only. Bandwidth is generally measured as:

Average number of times a page is viewed multiplied by the average number of visitors to your site on a daily basis multiplied by a variable factor multiplied by how many days in a month, with 30 being a good average.

If you would like to offer a range of flexibility regarding bandwidth usage, the following calculation may be preferable:

[(Visitors per day x number of pages looked at x size of the page) added to (the size of downloads per day x the size of the file downloaded) times the maximum number of days in a month (31) times by a variable factor.

Note: All these are measured based on average data.

How traffic and bandwidth are linked:

Bandwidth and traffic are closely interlinked with each other. Visitors can experience best the bandwidth as they are the people who carry out various activities with the websites. If a visitor wants to download an MP3 files from a website into the computer, then 4MB traffic is created between the website and the user’s computer. If the user is having a fast internet connection then the file won’t take much time to get downloaded and hence the bandwidth consumed in the process would be low. The reverse happens if the internet connectivity is poor. Traffic is measured by the number of bits that are transferred on network connections.

How to cut down bandwidth usage?

We all dread bills and an unexpected bill can really cause panic and problems to a person. If you exceed your bandwidth amount, your provider is well within their rights to charge you for this as well as send you a reminder to keep your usage down. This may obviously cause you problems and you could be wondering how you can fix this problem.

Every website is comprised of a number of files and each file on the website takes up so much space. If a visitor to your website comes along and uses these files, this will increase your bandwidth usage. As it is your website, you have the option to control aspects on your website and it is possible to alter how often a file gets used. By limiting the number of images or downloadable items you have available on your site, you can further reduce the bandwidth that is being used on your site. Considering that these files can have a huge size and if they are being downloaded by many users, the overall impact on your bandwidth usage can be very damaging. Altering certain things on your website can also help to reduce its use. For instance, if there is an image or file on your website that is downloaded every time a visitor hits your site, there will be an excessive amount of bandwidth being used. The first action may be too remove the offending file but if this is not an option open to you, you may wish to lower the size of the file. If you are able to do this, you should be rewarded with a lower bill the following month from your bandwidth provider. Another way to look at reducing your bandwidth use is to check for cascading style sheets as they are able to make the size of your HTML files much smaller.

Handy hints for your bandwidth:

* Be able to have a rough estimate of the amount of visitors that access your site or may be likely to access your site at a later date. You can see why it can be of use to have a projection for monthly usage.

* There are options to buy un-metered bandwidth hosting. In such a plan you are charged higher than nay normal shared or dedicated hosting plan and in return the usage will be unlimited. The host won’t monitor the bandwidth rating which is reflected on the left hand side of the control panel.

* When altering your website, ensure you make a note of the changes to allow your estimates to be up to date and more accurate.

* If there is an opportunity to limit the amount of comments a visitor can make to your site, this could be a good option to reduce excessive inputs.

* Be sure to communicate regularly with your web provider and seek their advice on how best to maintain or improve your website. Not every change will lead to a rise in the amount of bandwidth your site uses but there can be positive impacts as well. By removing any files that are no longer deemed necessary can free up bandwidth to be used for other purposes.

* If you use JavaScript then instead of embedding it in each page, use it externally.

* If you resize any of your graphics or logo, remember to refresh and upload to ensure your bandwidth usage is kept to a minimum.

Last remarks:

It is your web host that can guide you bets on bandwidth. Selection of the right web host can matter if your want a proper guidance on web hosting services. The structure and the content of the WebPages would definitely determine the bandwidth expenses. But the effective guidance from the web hosts can equally help you on this regard. Bandwidth theft is a common practice in which the people use other sites images by simply linking them with another page. Such practices, without notice, can be punishable and should not be practices. So if you are a novice, and your website owner advises you on this then always try to avoid. Before discussing with the web host regarding bandwidth and always better to make a study and some research on bandwidth. Your website developers can also guide you extensively in informing about the techniques to save bandwidth.
